Vantage Updated Sat, 2026 July 25 01:00

This week’s market recap covers 20 to 24 July 2026 across Vantage’s Market Pulse coverage, as of 09:00 (GMT+8) / 01:00 UTC, 24 July 2026. It was one of those weeks where nothing wanted to move in a straight line: the dollar sat on its hands, gold price today held the psychological $4,000-ish region through a run of Middle East headlines, and equities went from a semiconductor hangover into a genuine Big Tech test. None of it settled anything. That’s next week’s job.

Key Points

  • Gold (XAUUSD) spent the week defending its floor, swinging from roughly $3,995 to a two-week high near $4,140 before slipping back below $4,100 on Thursday as Middle East headlines and Fed positioning kept swapping the driver’s seat.
  • Stock market news this week centred on a semiconductor-led wobble carried over from the prior week, with the spotlight shifting mid-week to Wednesday earnings from Alphabet and Tesla, seen as a test of whether AI capital spending can hold up.
  • The coming week is stacked: the FOMC July 2026 decision lands 28 to 29 July, followed within 48 hours by Microsoft, Meta, Apple and Amazon earnings, plus a Thursday cluster of GDP, PCE, Personal Income and Jobless Claims data.

The Week That Was: A Dollar in Neutral, a Fed Gone Quiet

The US Dollar Index spent the week going nowhere in particular, and there was a good reason for it: the Federal Reserve entered its pre-meeting blackout period, so no scheduled Fed commentary was available to nudge positioning either way.[1] With the central bank effectively muted, market participants leaned on incoming data and the Middle East conflict to do the talking.

Gold felt that tension more than most. Spot gold climbed to a two-week high near $4,139.64 on Wednesday, per Reuters data cited by CNBC, as investors weighed the widening Middle East conflict against the approaching Fed meeting.[1] A Reuters poll found the Fed is still broadly expected to hold its key rate steady, though a majority of respondents who addressed a separate question on the odds of any 2026 hike now describe that probability as ‘high,’ a shift from ‘low’ just a month earlier.[1] Worth noting: this kind of poll-based sentiment shifts quickly, so treat it as a same-day snapshot rather than a fixed number.

By Thursday, gold had eased back below $4,100 after the Iran-backed Houthi movement said it had targeted two Saudi oil tankers, and the US carried out a twelfth consecutive night of strikes tied to the Middle East conflict.[2] Markets responded by pricing in a roughly one-in-three chance of a Fed rate move at next week’s meeting, with the odds of a September move climbing further still, according to data referenced by Trading Economics.[2] Fresh US tariffs of 10 to 12.5% on imports from several major trading partners added yet another layer to an already crowded backdrop.[2] These, too, are same-day reads worth rechecking closer to the decision.

Oil price news stayed firmly in the ‘elevated’ column all week, with Brent trading above $90 as the Middle East conflict continued to threaten flows through the Strait of Hormuz, a dynamic Vantage’s crude oil coverage tracked closely across both Brent (UKOUSD) and WTI (USOUSD) this week.[3]

Currencies: A Quiet Dollar, a Busier Yen and Sterling

Away from gold, the currency side of the ledger was comparatively calm. USDJPY traded within a familiar band either side of its 50- and 200-period moving averages across Vantage’s coverage on 20 and 24 July, with Bank of Japan policy chatter and intervention watch above the 160 handle framing the pair more than any single fresh catalyst.

GBPUSD had a livelier week, holding above the 1.33 handle as traders weighed a packed central bank calendar spanning the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England. With the Fed in blackout and the BoE’s own decisions still ahead, both pairs look set to keep taking their cues from US data rather than fresh commentary.

Equities: Semiconductors Wobble, Big Tech Earnings Loom

Equities carried a rougher tone into the week. The Nasdaq had fallen 2.90% the prior week as the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index approached a near 20% drawdown from its June high, alongside renewed concern over Chinese AI competition and guidance from Netflix and Intuitive Surgical that unsettled the growth narrative.[4] That move coincided with some of the strongest US inflation data of the year, a reminder that sector-specific flows can dominate price action even when the macro backdrop is genuinely improving.[4]

Attention swung mid-week to earnings. Alphabet and Tesla both reported on Wednesday, a session flagged in advance as pivotal for whether hyperscaler AI capital expenditure could hold up against the recent chip-sector reset.[4] Vantage’s own coverage leaned into that theme, with daily pieces on Nvidia (NVDA), AMD, Tesla (TSLA) and Alphabet (GOOG), plus an Analyst’s View on SK Hynix following its Nasdaq ADR listing.

At the index level, the Dow Jones, Nasdaq and S&P 500 all remained above their respective rising 52-week moving averages heading into the week, a technical detail suggesting the primary uptrend had not broken despite the sector-specific selling.[5] Asian equities, including the Nikkei 225, kept tracking the same session-by-session swings in US technology names that Vantage’s daily Nikkei coverage flagged throughout the week.

This Week on Vantage: What We Covered

Across Market Pulse, Macro and Analyst’s View formats, this week’s coverage spanned currencies, commodities, indices and individual shares. The common thread: a market that kept looking to the Fed for direction while the Middle East conflict and a dense earnings calendar did most of the actual moving.

  • Currencies: USDJPY (20 and 24 July), GBPUSD (22 July), and the USDX weekly analysis.
  • Commodities: XAUUSD daily coverage (20, 22 and 24 July) plus the weekly gold analysis, and Brent/WTI crude oil coverage (21 and 23 July).
  • Indices: SP500, NAS100 and Nikkei 225 daily analysis.
  • Shares: NVDA, AMD, TSLA and Alphabet (GOOG) daily coverage, plus an Analyst’s View piece on SK Hynix.

What to Watch Next Week

  • Consumer Confidence, 28 July 2026:  The Conference Board’s index, one of the last sentiment reads before the Fed decision.
  • FOMC Decision, 28-29 July 2026:  The Fed’s rate decision lands at 2:00 PM ET on 29 July, with Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference to follow. This meeting does not include an updated dot plot.
  • Microsoft and Meta Earnings, 29 July 2026:  Both report after the close on the same day as the Fed decision, one of the most concentrated event days of the year.
  • GDP, PCE, Personal Income and Jobless Claims, 30 July 2026:  A cluster of data lands at 8:30 AM ET, the morning after the Fed decision.
  • Apple and Amazon Earnings, 30 July 2026:  Both expected to report, closing out the Big Tech earnings cluster for the week.
  • Employment Cost Index, 31 July 2026:  A quarterly labour-cost gauge the Fed also watches for wage-driven inflation pressure.
  • Middle East Developments, Ongoing:  Any material change in the Middle East conflict, including developments around the Strait of Hormuz, remains a source of short-term volatility across oil, gold and the dollar.

On risk management: with the Fed decision, four Big Tech earnings reports and a full slate of US data landing inside the same few days, gaps between sessions can widen quickly. Reviewing Stop Loss placement and overall exposure across correlated positions, gold, the dollar and equity indices in particular, is worth doing before the calendar turns busy again.

Leverage works both ways in a week as data-dense as this one. Leverage magnifies gains and losses alike, so position sizing relative to account equity is worth revisiting ahead of the FOMC decision and the earnings cluster that follows it.
